Bringing the Life of a Bee Colony into the Classroom
In 2011, African Beekeepers Limited donated observation hives to the Lewa Conservation Education Centre in support of Lewa’s conservation education programme.
The donation formed part of ABL’s corporate social responsibility activities and created an opportunity for visiting students to observe the behaviour and organization of a living honeybee colony.
Unlike a conventional hive, an observation hive enables learners to see bees moving across the comb while remaining protected from direct contact with the colony.
LEARNING THROUGH OBSERVATION
Helping Students Understand Bees
The observation hive provides a practical learning experience that complements classroom teaching. Students can examine how bees organize themselves, build comb, store food and work together inside the colony.
This direct experience helps make complex subjects such as pollination, insect behaviour, biodiversity and food production easier to understand.
According to the original project record, more than 10,000 students visited the education centre following the installation of the observation hive.
EDUCATION THEMES
From Pollination to Sustainable Livelihoods
The exhibit supports discussion about the contribution insects make to agriculture through pollination and the importance of bees to healthy ecosystems.
Students can also learn about products associated with beekeeping, including honey, beeswax, candles and other value-added products.
The programme provides an opportunity to compare traditional and modern beekeeping methods and to explain how properly managed beekeeping can become an environmentally responsible economic activity.
CHALLENGES FACING POLLINATORS
Building Awareness of Bee Conservation
The observation hive also helps educators introduce the pressures affecting bees and other beneficial insects.
These include environmental pollution, inappropriate use of agricultural chemicals, loss of flowering vegetation and land degradation.
Helping young people understand these challenges encourages greater appreciation for pollinators and the natural environments upon which healthy colonies depend.

Observation hives give students a safe and memorable way to encounter a living bee colony. Through this experience, young people can develop a deeper appreciation for pollination, biodiversity, sustainable agriculture and the essential role bees play in our environment.
