ABOUT AFRICAN BEEKEEPERS
What Makes African Beekeepers Ltd a Leader in Modern Beekeeping?
African Beekeepers Limited (ABL) is a private company established in 2000 to support the development of the beekeeping and honey industry in Kenya, with a wider vision of serving the East African region.
From its Nairobi office, ABL has focused on agriculture because the sector remains central to Kenya’s economic development and continues to offer strong opportunities for enterprise growth. The company works with farmers, partners and development organizations to promote modern beekeeping as a practical and commercial enterprise.
ABL believes that appropriate technology, practical knowledge and access to markets can create meaningful change for agricultural producers and processors. In beekeeping, this means supporting farmers and partners with modern hive technology, practical training, processing support and market-oriented approaches.
Technology, Markets and Practical Partnerships
ABL believes in the use of technological advances in agriculture, combined with market opportunities for agricultural commodities, to bring positive change to agricultural producers and processors. However, the ecological and socio-economic complexity of Kenya’s agricultural sector requires practical partnerships and shared responsibility.
No single organization has a monopoly claim or the full capacity to transfer appropriate agricultural technology to rural communities alone. For this reason, ABL works through partnership, bringing together farmers, development organizations, technology, processing capacity and market linkages to create a more complete and practical beekeeping value chain.
The working of private-sector organizations in partnership with farmers has great potential when suitable technology, processing, marketing and production support are planned together. This helps create a vertically integrated commodity system where key aspects of production and marketing are not left to chance.
Commercial Honey Production and Market Opportunity
African Beekeepers Limited has chosen to work with farmer communities and willing development organizations in the commercial production of honey and associated bee products. Honey is a commodity with demand at domestic, regional and international levels.
With the knowledge that a market for high-quality honey is available, ABL focuses on putting in place an effective and efficient system for production, processing and marketing. This allows smallholder rural beekeeper communities and African Beekeepers Limited to play complementary roles in promoting honey production and benefiting from the honey industry.
ABL also recognizes that dwindling natural resources in many parts of Kenya require agricultural production methods that are both productive and environmentally responsible. Modern beekeeping offers an opportunity to support livelihoods while encouraging more sustainable use of natural resources.
OUR VISION FOR THE INDUSTRY
Turning Beekeeping into a Commercial Enterprise
The vision of African Beekeepers Limited is to promote beekeeping among smallholder farmer communities and willing development organizations, turning it into a commercial enterprise through modern beekeeping technology, equipment, honey production and associated bee products.
ABL believes this vision can be achieved step by step through the introduction and implementation of commercially oriented beekeeping technologies and the effective use of available market opportunities.
