The Buzz of Hope
FIELD EVIDENCE

The Buzz of Hope

In Nasaru Olosho Conservancy, 200 beehives are creating new possibilities for community livelihoods and environmental conservation. Through a partnership between WWF-Kenya and African Beekeepers Limited, supported by the Michael Otto Foundation for Sustainability, professional beekeeping, community training and a ready honey market are being brought together in one sustainable value chain. Hanging beehives from trees also helps protect the woodland by discouraging charcoal burners from felling occupied trees and deterring elephants from damaging them.

Honey, Livelihoods and Conservation in Nasaru

The initiative combines traditional tree-hanging beekeeping with scientific hive management, continuous technical support and a guaranteed market for harvested honey. Beyond producing honey, the hanging hives provide a practical layer of forest protection: their presence discourages charcoal burning and helps deter elephants from destroying the trees. With about 90 percent of the 200 installed hives colonised within two months, the project is giving families new hope while strengthening conservation and resilience to climate change and changing seasons.
