The ABL Box Hive

African Beekeepers Limited developed the ABL Box Hive as a practical hybrid combining selected features of the Langstroth beehive and the Kenya Top Bar Hive.

The hive is designed for beekeepers who want a structured brood-and-super system while retaining the simpler comb-harvesting method associated with top-bar hives.

It separates the brood area from the honey-storage area, allowing the beekeeper to harvest honey and beeswax from the super while leaving the brood nest below.

HIVE DESIGN

How the ABL Box Hive Works

The hive consists of a brood box fitted with top bars and a separate honey super positioned above it.

The bars are arranged with the appropriate bee space, allowing worker bees to move between the brood chamber and the honey super without unnecessary obstruction.

A queen excluder separates the two sections. Worker bees can pass through the excluder into the super, while the queen remains in the brood box below.

Keeping the queen out of the super helps prevent brood from being raised in the combs intended for honey harvesting.

SIMPLIFIED MANAGEMENT

Designed for Practical Hive Management

The ABL Box Hive is designed to require relatively simple management compared with more equipment-intensive beekeeping systems.

Its brood-and-super arrangement provides a clear division between the colony’s brood area and the combs intended for honey storage.

As with every managed beehive, regular observation remains important. The beekeeper should monitor colony activity, hive condition, pests, available forage and the maturity of honeycombs before harvesting.

HONEY AND WAX HARVESTING

No Centrifugal Extractor Required

Honeycombs are constructed on the bars in the super. When the honey is mature and the combs are properly capped, selected combs can be removed for harvesting.

The comb is cut from the super bar and processed using a crush-and-strain method. The honey is separated from the crushed beeswax using an appropriate food-grade sieve or straining system.

This harvesting method does not require a centrifugal honey extractor. It allows the beekeeper to recover both honey and beeswax from the harvested comb.
