COMMUNITY BEEKEEPING PROJECT

Beekeeping alongside Coffee Production in Embu

African Beekeepers Limited partnered with Rainforest Alliance and Ruama Coffee Cooperative Society to establish an outgrower beekeeping project in Embu County.

The project introduced modern beekeeping as an additional enterprise for members of the coffee cooperative. It brought together the cooperative’s members, project partners and ABL’s practical beekeeping experience.

PROJECT OWNERSHIP

Hives Owned by Cooperative Members

The project beehives belong to members of Ruama Coffee Cooperative Society. This gives participating members a direct stake in the beekeeping activity and in the honey produced from their hives.

The arrangement connects community ownership with professional technical supervision, allowing members to participate while benefiting from ABL’s knowledge of modern hive management.

PRACTICAL MANAGEMENT

Member Participation with ABL Supervision

African Beekeepers Limited is involved in managing the project beehives. Selected members of the cooperative participate in hive management under ABL supervision.

This approach gives participating members practical exposure to modern beekeeping while ensuring that the colonies receive informed and consistent management.

Working alongside ABL enables the selected members to strengthen their understanding of hive inspection, colony management and honey harvesting within a structured project.

MARKET CONNECTION

A Purchasing Arrangement for the Honey

African Beekeepers Limited purchases all the honey produced under the project through a purchasing contract.

This arrangement connects the cooperative’s beekeeping activity to an identified buyer and gives the project a clear route from honey production to market.
