INTERNATIONAL INDUSTRY EXPOSURE
ABL at the 45th Apimondia Congress in Istanbul
African Beekeepers Limited Director Ernest Simeoni participated in the 45th Apimondia International Apicultural Congress held in Istanbul, Turkey, from 29 September to 4 October 2017.
Hosted by the Turkish Beekeeping Association, the congress brought together beekeepers, researchers, equipment manufacturers, honey traders, development practitioners and other professionals from across the international apiculture industry.
ABL’s participation provided an opportunity to compare experiences, study emerging technologies and explore developments relevant to modern beekeeping in Kenya and the wider East African region.

Learning from the Global Beekeeping Community
Apimondia congresses provide an international platform for sharing scientific research, practical field experience, production technologies and market knowledge.
Through congress sessions, exhibitions and technical visits, participants examine developments in areas such as bee health, colony management, honey quality, processing, pollination, equipment manufacturing and sustainable rural development.
For ABL, this exposure supported continued learning and offered practical ideas that could be considered within Kenya’s distinctive environmental, agricultural and beekeeping conditions.
TECHNICAL EXPOSURE
From Mobile Apiaries to Honey Processing
Technical visits provided an opportunity to see how different organizations manage beekeeping at scale.
One notable example was a mobile semi-trailer fitted with 192 beehives for pollination services. The system demonstrated how colonies can be transported efficiently between farms according to crop location and flowering periods.
Visits to honey cooperatives and processing businesses also demonstrated the importance of organized collection, quality management, packaging, presentation and access to established markets.
PARTNERSHIPS AND RESEARCH
Connecting Practical Beekeeping with Institutions
The programme included engagement with Düzce University and representatives of Turkey’s beekeeping and honey-processing industry.
These interactions highlighted the contribution that universities, cooperatives, private businesses and beekeeper organizations can make when research, production and market development are connected.
Such partnerships are especially relevant to ABL’s work in modern hive manufacturing, beekeeper training, honey production, commercial pollination and technical consultancy.

Participation in international industry forums helps ABL compare technologies, production systems and market approaches while identifying ideas that can be adapted to African bees, local environments and the practical needs of beekeepers in Kenya.
