Introducing NyukiTracks Beekeeping App

African Beekeepers Limited developed NyukiTracks to improve how information from beehives, apiaries and honey-production sites is collected, organized and used.

At the time the application was introduced, ABL had accumulated more than 20 years of practical beekeeping experience and was managing approximately 1,000 beehives across different locations in Kenya.

Managing commercial honey production across several locations requires reliable information. Beekeepers need to understand not only the condition of the bees and the amount of honey produced, but also the environment surrounding every apiary.

NyukiTracks was developed to help field teams capture this information using smartphone technology and transfer it from the field to a central computer for reporting and analysis.

Understanding the Hive and Its Environment

Honey production is affected by many interconnected factors. Colony condition, hive management, weather, vegetation, flowering periods and nectar availability can all influence the performance of an apiary.

Information collected from individual sites helps ABL understand how bee colonies respond to different environments and management practices.

Comparing records from different locations can also help identify flowering patterns, productive nectar sources, changes in weather and variations in honey production.

Capturing Accurate Information from the Field

ABL had gathered beekeeping and honey-production information for many years using manual recording systems. Although this created a valuable body of historical information, collecting and organizing the records was time-consuming.

Manual records could also be difficult to consolidate quickly when information came from several apiary locations and different field officers.

NyukiTracks introduced a more efficient approach. Information recorded through a smartphone can be transferred from the field to a central system, where it is organized and displayed in report formats.

The reports can then be reviewed, stored or printed, supporting faster access to information and more consistent monitoring of beekeeping operations.

BETTER MANAGEMENT DECISIONS

Turning Field Information into Practical Knowledge

Digital records make it easier to compare apiary performance across locations and over different seasons. This provides a clearer picture of which sites are performing well and where additional management attention may be required.

Consistent information can support the scheduling of inspections, monitoring of flowering seasons, preparation for honey harvests and evaluation of production from different vegetation zones.
