Managed Bee Colonies Supporting Avocado Production in Nyeri

Beekeeping is not limited to honey production. Managed honeybee colonies can also provide an important agricultural service by pollinating commercial crops during their flowering period.

African Beekeepers Limited secured a commercial pollination contract to provide managed bee colonies for an avocado plantation in Nyeri, Kenya.

The arrangement involves positioning strong, well-stocked Langstroth beehives close to the crop when the avocado trees are in flower. This increases bee activity throughout the plantation and supports the transfer of pollen between flowers.

HOW THE SERVICE WORKS

Taking Healthy Colonies to Flowering Crops

Commercial pollination is widely practised in agricultural systems where large areas of flowering crops require dependable pollinator activity.

Before deployment, ABL evaluates the strength and condition of the colonies selected for the assignment. Suitable beehives are then transported to the farm and distributed around the crop to provide effective coverage.

Timing is critical. The colonies must be present when flowering begins and remain active during the main bloom period. Their health, activity and access to water must be monitored throughout the assignment.

Once flowering is complete, the colonies can be removed from the plantation and transferred to another suitable apiary or flowering crop.
