HONEY VALUE CHAIN DEVELOPMENT
Building a Modern Beekeeping Partnership in Baringo
In August 2015, African Beekeepers Limited entered into a one-year Baringo honey value chain pilot project with Hand in Hand Eastern Africa.
The partnership was designed to help participating beekeeper groups improve their production through modern equipment, practical training and continued technical support.
ABL trained Hand in Hand staff and members of the participating honey value chain groups in modern hive management and improved honey production techniques.
EQUIPMENT AND TRAINING
Combining Modern Hives with Practical Knowledge
ABL supplied modern beekeeping equipment to the participating groups through Hand in Hand Eastern Africa. The partner collected payments from the groups to cover the equipment provided.
Supplying hives was only one part of the intervention. ABL and Hand in Hand provided training and extension services throughout the pilot period to help members develop the skills required to manage their colonies effectively.
The training covered practical areas such as apiary establishment, colony management, hive inspection, harvesting and the careful handling of honey.
EARLY PROGRESS
Learning Through Successive Harvests
Participating groups began harvesting honey from the project beehives in February 2016. Three additional harvests followed during the pilot period.
Production increased gradually as members gained experience and improved their practical skills in managing modern beehives.
This progression demonstrated that equipment alone does not guarantee successful honey production. Regular colony management, technical guidance and practical experience are essential for sustained improvement.
SCALING THE PARTNERSHIP
Extending Support Beyond the Pilot Phase
The progress achieved during the pilot created a foundation for a longer-term partnership. ABL subsequently signed a three-year memorandum of understanding with Hand in Hand Eastern Africa to continue developing the Baringo honey value chain.
The extended arrangement provided an opportunity to strengthen beekeeper skills, improve production systems and support a more organized honey value chain over a longer period.
THE VALUE CHAIN APPROACH
Equipment, Skills and Continued Support
The Baringo pilot demonstrated that sustainable honey production requires more than distributing beehives. Progress comes from combining suitable equipment with practical training, extension services, organized producer groups and continued improvement through successive harvests.
